Fighting for Your Children: Custody Wars

Nobody wants to face the fact that some divorces turn into battles. Children soon learn that they are the prize in a terrible game. We as divorce lawyers try to help our clients avoid such fights, but sometimes, they are unavoidable.

If you find yourself in a custody war, arm yourself. Your weapons are not necessarily daggers in the heart of the other parent. They are your own accomplishments.

Keep a daily journal of what you do with your children.
Call, e-mail, or visit their schools on a regular basis.
Schedule and attend their doctor appointments.
Attend their school plays, scout and church events.
Check their shoes to make sure they fit; take them to get haircuts.
Bring them to their friends' houses for visits.
Keep them actively involved in your extended family's lives.
Read to them.
Make sure you know their friends' names, their friends' parents, and their favorite colors.

These efforts will pay off, both in your relationship with your children, and in the divorce court.
