Divorce Is Not For the Squeamish

Every day, I talk to people who dread the thought of getting divorced. They don't think they system will be fair. They don't think their spouse will play nice. They worry about what their kids will do when they have to bounce back and forth between their parents. They have genuine fears that they will not be able to afford to live on one income, pay their divorce attorney, or retire when they get older or infirm.

I tell them all the same thing: You are right. Divorce is hard. But your attorney should make it easier for you. Your attorney can't work miracles, but he or she can help you navigate the rocky waters of a break-up. They learn your goals and help you assess whether they are practical. They tell you what the law allows, requires, and prohibits. They help you separate the do-able from the impossible, and steer you towards the best possible outcome.

Get a good lawyer. Then, take a deep breath. This, too, shall pass.
